Helpful, popular, good in school, and constantly happy – that’s V, the role 25-year-old Veera takes on in her live action role-playing games, which borrows its setting from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Veera began role playing when she was 11 and has participated in some 30 games so far. In real life, she’s anything but constantly happy. Her father, with whom she’s had no contact for the last 15 years, was an alcoholic and violent. He continues to lead Veera’s cognitively disabled brother into drink. But now, her contact with wizards and witches gives her the strength to confront the demons of her childhood … With great sympathy for its brave protagonist, the film depicts how creating imaginary characters can reverberate through real life. As the young woman, sometimes a redhead, sometimes a bluehead, says of herself “it’s hard to understand who I am”.
