In the media, the Brussels neighbourhood of Molenbeek is known mainly as a hotbed of jihadism. But for six-year-old Aatos, the son of a Finnish mother and a Chilean father, and for his friend Amine, it’s simply their familiar home turf. It is here that they listen to spiders together, discover black holes, and fight about who gets to steer the flying carpet. Together, they explore the big issues in life. But the brutality of the world of grown-ups makes itself felt when terrorists set off a bomb in the neighbourhood. Aatos is envious of Amine’s faith in Islam, and looks for his own gods, even though his classmate Flo is dubious about the quest. Flo is completely convinced that anyone who believes in God is utterly crazy … “Gods of Molenbeek” is a wonderful depiction of friendship among children and the search for meaning in chaotic times.
