Dance the Fridtjof Nansen! Dance the Roald Amundsen! Thomas Freundlich and Valtteri Raekallio are stars of the international “screen dance” scene; they were also the artistic directors of the Finnish Loikka Dance Film Festival for a time. In their most recent film, they take on the male behaviours observed in pictures, books, and films of the early Arctic explorers. While preparing for the journey, some of which takes place in Oslo’s Fram Museum, their dialogues convey what they’ve learned about polar exploration in their research. Dance rehearsals provide initial impressions of their intention to interpret the macho posturing and colonialist behaviour of national polar heroes such as Nansen and Amundsen through dance. But it is only against the awesome backdrop of Spitzbergen, where they are exposed to the harsh Arctic weather, that their performance unleashes its full power.
