Was Dag Hammarskjöld’s death a political crime or a complex conspiracy? Documentary filmmaker Mads Brügger leaves that question unanswered at the end of his film, which examines the 1961 plane crash in what was then Rhodesia that killed the UN secretary-general. Was it an accident or an assassination? In tracing the various threads in several African countries, Brügger meets former mercenaries and their unscrupulous bosses, who have connections to Western intelligence agencies … In a passionate mixture of investigative journalism and cinematic (self-)dramatization, the director presents possible motives and perpetrators. In addition to interviews and archival footage and stills, animated sequences also serve to elucidate the contemporary mystery. Piece by piece, those elements merge like a cinematic puzzle into a fascinating real-life political thriller. The film is nominated for the European Parliament’s Lux Prize.
