Warsaw, 1975. Ryszard Kapuściński is 43, a brilliant journalist and an idealist. He persuades his boss at the Polish state news agency to send him to Angola, where a bloody civil war is raging on the eve of the country’s independence. Once in the country, he experiences the grubby reality of the war, and discovers a helplessness he’s never felt before. His travels take him to the centre of a forlorn place and Angola will change him forever – he leaves Poland as a reporter and returns as a writer. This absorbing adaptation of Kapuściński’s book of the same name uses unusual methods to compensate for the lack of historical footage. Two-thirds of the film are animated in the style of a graphic novel with sometimes explosive images that are complemented by documentary material. The result is a piece of history that is as gripping in content as it is visually.
