1918. Aufstand der Matrosen1918: The Sailors' Revolt

Filmforum, Germany 2018, 90 Min., germ. OV

"Facing a senseless naval order to attack the superior British fleet, in October 1918, German sailors led a revolt. While the revolutionaries, led by Karl Artelt, hoped that other workers would join them, the new naval commander at Kiel, Wilhelm Souchon, tried to pour oil on the waters with the help of Reichstag M.P. Gustav Noske, a Social Democrat. The parliamentarian wrested authority away from Karl Artelt, forced Souchon to step down, and used a series of machinations to end the revolt within a few days. But he was unable to prevent the revolutionary ideas from spreading across the country. The reconstructed scenes are complemented by archive footage from Kiel and witness testimony. In addition, Björn Engholm, Sahra Wagenknecht, and admiral of the fleet Kay-Uwe Schönbach talk about the great significance of those events for the dawn of German democracy."
