The princess has reached her 18th birthday without getting married, so the Mountain King – a humongous troll – will be coming to get her. At least that’s how legend has it. But there must be a rescuing hero in the story, right? When her proposed husband turns out to be a vain lout, the princess gets on a horse and flees. And sure enough, the prophesy comes true! Espen Ash Lad actually has problems to spare at the moment, after having set his parents hut on fire. Nonetheless, he and his two brothers set out to rescue the princess. Mikkel Brænne Sandemose brings a contemporary and extremely new twist to the beloved fairy tale figure of Askeladden, a rather simple character with a good heart who always triumphs in the end. The film sports opulent imagery, super nasty witches, oversized monsters – and a prince who is as thick as the proverbial post.
