“Bridges of Time” is a compilation of sequences and images created by directors from Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania, woven into a meditative essay about the power of documentaries. In the 1960s and 1970s, directors such as Ivars Seleckis, Robertas Verba, and later Mark Soosar began developing an alternate concept to the official Soviet cinema. The pictures that emerged were documentation and poetry that were no longer beholden to pure realism and certainly not to propaganda, but instead consistently put people at the centre of the frame. “We film the Earth, but we always remember that heaven is above us”, says former Latvian documentary filmmaker Herz Frank at the beginning of the film. Last but not least, it was about slow cinema – “we had a camera. And we had time”.
