Stig Björkman has published several interview books and films about Ingmar Bergman since the 60s. His portrait from 1971 has a special place in this. For a few days, Björkman visited the team behind Bergman’s American co-production “The Touch” on Gotland, documented the film’s shooting and led interviews with Max von Sydow, Bibi Andersson, Elliot Gould, Bergman himself and others. Björkman succeeded in illustrating this slice of Bergman’s life and work as well as expounding structural elements that can be found throughout Bergman’s work. The hand camera recordings from the set are fascinating, emphatically showing how Bergman worked with technicians and actors to bring his vision to the silver screen. The documentary portrait, which had been originally shot on 16 mm, can now be presented in restored form for the first time.
