Juste is suicidal and Paulius has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, so neither of them makes an ideal travelling companion for psychology student Indre. Especially since the nurse who was originally in the car soon goes lost at a highway rest stop. But over the course of their road trip from Vilnius to the coastal town of Palanga, the three disparate travellers draw close to each other. With “Summer Survivors”, director Marija Kavtaradze has succeeded in making a sensitive, yet matter-of-fact film about mental illness that never becomes melodramatic. It’s a melancholy comedy with precisely drawn characters, and the camera – and with it the audience – gets up close to them without the film losing its cinematic discernment. Kavtaradze says her film is a love letter to everyone suffering from mental illness.
