Tuntematon mestari

Tuntematon mestariEin unbekannter Meister / One Last Deal

Competition Narrative Films, Finland 2018, 94 Min., finn. OV, engl. st

Before he starts his retirement, the art dealer Olavi would like to pull off one last coup: During an auction, his attention is drawn to a painting by an unknown master. Olavi is convinced that it is a work by the legendary Russian-Finnish painter Ilja Repin. He obsessively begins to research the provenance of the picture. And it does not suit him at all that his grandson Otto is supposed to undertake work placement with him now, too. Gradually, however, the grandson and grandfather draw closer to each other. But will the two of them manage to finalise Olavi's deal and outsmart the arrogant art trade? Klaus Härö has shot a calm and wonderful film about growing old and generational changes, as well as about the eternal conflict between work and family, with the outstanding Heikki Nousiainen in the leading role, who already demonstrated his brilliance in “Letters to Father Jacob”.
