In August 1942, amid the unfathomable suffering of the German blockade of Leningrad, conductor Karl Eliasberg faced a near-insurmountable task – the city’s premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Leningrad Symphony”. The concert would become a symbol of a brief victory of culture over the barbarism of war. This is the story of the unrelenting will to survive of the people of Leningrad, and their battle for a touch of humanity in the face of death. This very moving docu-drama explores the perspective of both the besieged and the besiegers. In addition to witness testimony, the film is underpinned by interviews with academic experts such as the historian Prof. Dr. Sönke Neitzel, and British journalist and writer Anna Reid (“Leningrad: The Epic Siege of World War II, 1941-1944”).
