Wojtek is leaving Poland for the first time in his life. He and his parents are going to spend the summer months in southern Sweden, where the family will work picking strawberries to earn some much needed cash. Their mundane life on their knees in the fields, and then in their run-down mobile home is far from idyllic. Wojtek’s mother wishes for a different, better life for her son. But then Wojtek meets Annelie, the notoriously ill-tempered daughter of the farmer. The two young people slowly start to draw closer to each other, and soon a tender love blooms between them. But they come from very different, and strictly segregated worlds. Using actual seasonal workers as lay actors, director Wiktor Ericsson has created a film with great poetic power, with images that convey the vastness of nature bumping up against the restrictive reality of a labour market characterised by hierarchies and competition.
