Nothing in Anders’ life is going according to plan. His father is in prison and his mother works night shifts to make ends meet for her and the four children. Then, just as Anders’ father finally gets home, the bailiffs show up at the door. The family is losing the apartment due to back rent. While mum lands in the hospital after a spell of faintness, Anders, his siblings, and papa go to stay with Uncle Georg, who has big plans. He wants to kidnap “Bernhard la Croix Ericsen von der Liebe”, the scion of a banking family, and hold him for ransom. Because their father can’t find a job, Anders, his kvetching big brother Oskar, his quick-witted sister Winnie, and little Bertram become Georg’s accomplices. Thankfully, Bernhard is so bored that a kidnapping seems like just what the doctor ordered. After all, no amount of money in the world is any use if you’re always alone.
