“A punk chick flick about radical young girls in a normal world”, is how director Annika Berg describes her unusual film. At the core of the film are eight teenage girls, who don’t want to be normal and are battling both themselves and the world. They find strength together at a youth centre, but they can also show weakness. Filmed as a pseudo-documentary, the often inconsequential, not to say comical situations, as well as scattered video diary sequences deal with issues such as self-worth, anorexia, or gender politics. The remarkable authenticity that results is largely thanks to the non-professional actors, who were cast via social networks, and whom Berg encouraged to get in touch with their own sore spots. But also keeping it very real is the eclectic visual style that draws on the (self) representation forms of indigenous digital peoples.
