At the very first meeting between Thelma and Anja in the university library, Thelma is literally knocked for a loop – she has a seizure. The shy, seemingly rather innocent young woman is tested for epilepsy. But it soon becomes apparent that she is dealing with forces beyond the ken of traditional medicine. Thelma begins to do research and finds out more and more about her suppressed family history. In this psychological thriller, Joachim Trier does a masterly job of putting together a mosaic piece by piece – in elegant yet extremely intense images. But the film lives first and foremost from its fantastic lead actor, Eili Harboe. It is no wonder that “Thelma” is Norway’s entry into the category of best foreign language film nominations for the Oscar. A worthy successor to Brian De Palma’s “Carrie”.
