The 42 cadets who set sail on a 1957 training cruise under the command of Captain Yngvar Kjelstrup would need to learn seamanship, but their singing voices were already primed. The student crew of the Sk/S Christian Radich sailed across the Atlantic and back, giving shanty concerts in ports-of-call at Madeira, in Puerto Rico, Curaçao, Trinidad and New York. But the focus of their 17,000-mile journey was the experience of being at sea, which the filmmakers used three cameras to capture in an ultra-widescreen format called “Cinemiracle”. Among the film’s highlights are a meeting with Spanish cellist Pablo Casals on land, and an encounter at sea with the sail freighter “Pamir”, which would later sink, on its last voyage across the Atlantic. – Digitally restored version.
