Competition Documentaries, Finland 2015, 82 Min., finn. OV, engl. st
The lights dim, the theatre goes silent. Then the big screen lights up and transports the audience to another world. Seeing a film in a cinema is a very special experience. In his film, Jouko Aaltonen follows the tracks of that movie magic. He and his crew spent more than three years on a pilgrimage to big screen temples all across the country, from old ones – some of which are bowling alleys or restaurants today – to new ones. Everywhere they went they met film fans and filmmakers who spoke passionately and with humour about their love of cinema. Aaltonen weaves a panorama of Finland’s cinema culture from the 1920s through the 1950s’ heyday of movies to the digital age, which has been a particular blessing for small movie theatres far from the big city.
