Drømmen om Danmark

Drømmen om DanmarkDer Traum von Dänemark / Dreaming of Denmark

Competition Documentaries, Denmark 2015, 58 Min., OV, engl. st

During his restless nights, Wasiullah dreams of Denmark. When he awakes, he’s in Italy. He fled Afghanistan at the age of 15 and has been through an odyssey that took him to Europe and twice across the continent. His application for political asylum in Denmark was rejected, meaning he would be deported when he turned 18. So Wasiullah went underground. He travelled to Italy to apply for asylum there. But the system is hopelessly overburdened. For months before his scheduled hearing, he lives in a demoralising state of uncertainty. Michael Graversen met Wasiullah for the first time in 2012 in a home for underage, unaccompanied refugees in Denmark. The director followed his protagonist for three years as the young man wound his way through a dysfunctional system – becoming by necessity the only constant in the asylum-seeker’s life.
