Filmforum, Austria / Germany / United Kingdom 2015, 88 Min., germ. version
The fears and desires that we associate with today’s digital networked world did not actually begin in the computer age. They have their roots in the era more than 100 years ago, when the telephone, radio, film and television were invented. Those early, revolutionary media sparked passionate images of utopia, one promising unlimited communication and even the end of war through better understanding. Yet even then, the seemingly unlimited opportunities those media offered simultaneously triggered fears of abuse and the loss of privacy. This film, a brilliant montage of largely unseen archival material, is accompanied by a narration that provides not only an absorbing insight into the greater context, but also suddenly provides dialogue for some scenes.
