In the depths of the sparsely-populated German state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, a ferryman lives with his wife on the banks of the river Elde. For 70 years now, Günther Link has taken people across the river in his small boat, as his grandfather did before him. He and his wife Martha live on a run-down farm, where he enjoys his freedom and the simple life. Although sometimes his hearing fails him, especially when Martha’s talking.
