Hringurinn

HringurinnThe Ring Road

Retrospective, Iceland 1985, 81 Min., no dialogue

The “Hringvegur” is Iceland’s most important traffic artery. With a length of 1339 kilometres, the Ring Road runs right the way around the country’s main island. In 1982, Fridrik Thór Fridriksson drove its entire length and shot this experimental documentary along the way. In the tradition of the early film genre of “phantom rides”, he attached a camera to the car’s dashboard that shot one frame every 12 metres. Projected at normal speed, the film circumnavigates the island in just 81 minutes. The hypnotic road trip, which begins in early morning Reykjavik and ends in the night-time illuminated capital, is accompanied by music of the spheres. We travel along the seacoast, passing gently rolling hills, isolated farmsteads, snow-capped volcanoes, glaciers and geysers, showcasing the unique beauty of Iceland in a constantly changing palette of colours.
