Petty crook Manne and his ex-girlfriend Veera are fleeing from a pair of ill-tempered gangsters. Along the way, they pick up a pal named Harri, who immediately falls head over heels for Veera. Three people in a car, no shortage of vodka, and a dash of love and thrills – the result is a very Finnish combination of crime caper and love story, which won Mika Kaurismäki the 1982 Jussi for best director. Kaurismäki said of the film, “In a light action film, I’m showing people who are in a battle with society; young people who at some point realise that the world did not live up to their expectations, and who became old before their time. I didn’t want to directly depict their feelings, but I hope that they are palpable in the whole atmosphere of the movie, in the landscape and in the unspoken words”.
