Claus Pedersen is at war. He is the officer in charge of a unit of Danish soldiers stationed in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. Their mission is to protect the civilian population and fight the Taliban. But it’s not always that easy to determine who is friend and who is foe. While Claus is deployed, his wife Maria is at home, a de facto single mother trying her hardest to maintain as normal as possible a life for their three children. Then the inevitable happens. Claus and his unit are ambushed while on patrol and he makes a decision that will expose him to charges of war crimes back in Denmark. With its realistic dialogue and a powerful ensemble of actors, the film portrays war as a highly complex situation, where conflicting loyalties can’t always be balanced out justly.
