Sabine and Michael are both about 40 and have lived together happily for a long time. He has a son from a previous relationship, whom he sees once a week. Sabine would like a child of her own and together they make the decision to try. They are both happy when Sabine gets pregnant, but then she loses the child. They carry on as before, work a lot and don’t see each other much. Nor do they have sex much. One morning, Sabine points out that they’re unlikely to conceive a child at this rate. Michael’s reaction is guarded; he seems unsure whether he still wants another child. She feels sandbagged; he is speechless. Sabine tries to understand. In vain. He withdraws into his work and mundane everyday concerns. They dance around the issue until Sabine makes a decision and Michael is finally able to speak about his feelings.
