Peter Nagel

Filmforum, Germany 2014, 52 Min.

A documentary about the renowned German painter Peter Nagel. His greatest work, in the strict sense of the term, was his painting on the ceiling of the Kiel-Mettenhof school, done in 1976/77 and titled “Klettergerüst” (“monkey bars”). In 2013, filmmaker Christian Mertens returned to his old school to experience the artwork again. He found himself still fascinated by it and decided to pay the Kiel artist a visit. The end result is not only a very informative portrait of the painter, one of the founders in the mid 1960s of the new realism art group “Zebra”; it is also a film about an unusual art project involving the school’s students. Peter Nagel went back to the school and used his own ceiling painting as an example to help the young people create their own version of it, while putting themselves ‘in the picture’.
