Ich habe einen Traum

Ich habe einen TraumI Have a Dream

Filmforum, Germany 2014, 65 Min.

The film follows a group of local schoolchildren and young refugees, mostly from Afghanistan, working together on a theatre piece in Kiel. The project is a bit of an experiment, as the refugees speak little German and the students have no experience dealing with immigrants. Three drama coaches provide structure, encourage the participants and help them with the staging. The young refugees describe their experiences, which range from being subjected to violence by border guards to journeys in overcrowded boats, and even the death of fellow refugees. Meanwhile, the Germans dream of careers as boxers or fashion designers. But contact with the refugees and their often harrowing stories makes the local students acutely aware of the affluence and peace they enjoy. The closer it gets to opening night, the more frantic the rehearsals become on the as yet unfinished play. Soon the curtain will rise on “I have a dream”.
