Retrospective, Finland 1960, 103 Min.
Fantastically rich, but not particularly endearing industrial heir and playboy Bruno Rygseck invites a group of people to his stately mansion for a fun night of role-playing mystery games. But the next morning, the guests awake to a rude shock. Their host has been found dead in the bathtub. Inspector Palmu is called to the scene and quickly establishes that Bruno most likely did not slip on the soap. A suspenseful whodunit based on the 1940 detective story by Finnish author Mika Waltari, the film is astonishing in both its high-voltage storyline and its extravagant comedic elements. In his homeland, “komisario Palmu” is a cult figure. The film was followed by three sequels in the 1960s and as recently as 2012, a survey of critics, journalists and bloggers by Finnish broadcaster YLE rated it the best Finnish film ever made.
