It’s the summer holidays of 1967 in the Swedish backwater of Kumla. The local teenagers help out cutting peat and are huge fans of the straight-laced Paul Anka. As for 17-year-old Mauritz, he’d rather listen to Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones and has dreams of a more eventful life somewhere else. Then there is Signhild, the girl next door, whom he finally gets to know more intimately this summer. Just when the pair’s burgeoning romance seems poised to open all doors, Signhild’s cruel, hard-drinking father is discovered murdered in his bed – with a mysterious message in his mouth. Nothing will ever be the same. This film version of Håkan Nesser’s young adult novel of the same name is a crime drama, underworld and coming of age story, and romance all rolled into one. Danneborn tells the story ardently and recreates with great skill the atmosphere of late 1960s rural Sweden.
