Competition Documentaries, Iceland 2013, 53 Min., engl. ST
This is not just any old grocery store. The shop bearing the name Verzlun H. Júlíusson in the small Icelandic town of Sau árkrókur first opened its doors in 1919. Since then, it has been providing anything and everything you would expect from an old-fashioned general store. The shelves boast packaged soups, lollipops and teapots, snuggled up next to the work clothes, screws and batteries. Both the fittings and its weighing scale are at least a half-century old. Every day, 83-year-old Bjarni Haraldsson stands behind the counter. He advises customers, willingly allows himself to be drawn in to conversations or goes looking for some particularly weird special customer request. Occasionally friends visit him at work and there is coffee and cake and stories of the old days. The film is a look back at a form of commerce and human interaction that is rarely found anymore, even in Iceland.
