Nana Benz

Nana Benz

Filmforum, Germany 2012, 87 Min., German OV

These inventive female entrepreneurs were the first Mercedes drivers on the West African coast. They influenced Togo history from the wars for independence to the time of dictatorship to today's era of globalisation. The population see the “Nana Benz” as mythical figures with supernatural powers. They interfere in political issues and have a close, tense relationship with the young dictator Eyadema. Their Pagne fabrics aren't merely beautiful. They are a means of communication in matters love, jealousy, magic and politics. The fabrics one wears contain that which words cannot express.
