Waar blijft het licht

Waar blijft het lichtDie Stunde des Lichts / When the Light Comes

Retrospective, Germany / Belgium / Netherlands / Denmark 1998, 115 Min., FSK ab 12

Enough of stressful urban life! Ellen is a student who wishes to find her own self in the loneliness of Spitsbergen. But it is not the herculean trapper of her expectations who offers her shelter in his cabin. The Norwegian fur-hunter Lars is the exact opposite of a dream lover: taciturn, heavy-handed, solitary. Yet these two very different people must come to terms with each other in this tiny space that they share in the midst of this infinite snowscape. This arctic intimate play is an adaptation of the autobiographical novel “Waar blijft het licht” by Heleen van der Laan, and boasts grandiose landscape images in cinemascope, exciting dog sled races through nighttime snowscapes - and a cross-grained love story that will warm even the coldest of hearts.
