In 1923 the Dessau-based entrepreneur Hugo Junkers hired the Swiss pilot and cameraman Walter Mittelholzer to make the first aerial shots of of Spitsbergen and the adjoining arctic region in two Junkers F 13, the first aeroplanes to be constructed entirely of metal.
