350 years ago a reformation of the Russian Orthodox church rolled over all those who opposed a renewal. The “old believers" lost all their rights and were persecuted. Many died or fled the country. Some settled in small villages on the banks of the Peipus lake in Eastern Estonia, from where they could see their homeland. They held onto their traditions, began fishing and cultivating vegetables - mostly onions - and were soon forgotten by time and the rest of the world. Today there are practically no young people living in the village, and the community is too poor to be able to pay a priest. For this reason, the village women themselves have now begun to preach the sermons according to the old rites. The film portrays a rural community over the course of several decades, in its struggle to find its place in modern times while retaining its identity.
