Müll im Garten Eden

Müll im Garten EdenPolluting Paradise

Filmforum, Germany 2012, 98 Min.

Çamburnu is a small mountain village in north-east Turkey. Thanks to the mild, humid Black Sea climate, generations of villagers have thrived off tea plantations, fishing and life in harmony with nature. But the idyll is endangered since the government passed a resolution ten years ago to build a waste disposal plant directly uphill from the village. Construction of the plant is going ahead, despite protests by the mayor and the inhabitants, and despite the fact that important safety and building standards are being ignored, causing accidents and damages that are continually polluting the environment. The air and the ground water are contaminated, during the annual rain period the water floods the trash down the hillside, and the village is besieged by stray dogs and flocks of birds. The tea farmers, whose plantations lie downhill from the garbage plant, are robbed of their existence. The consequences are disastrous and openly visible to anyone.
