Låt den rätte komma inSo finster die Nacht / Let the Right One In

Retrospective, Sweden 2008, 106 Min., FSK 16

The corpse of a boy is found in suburban Stockholm – completely devoid of blood. The police assumes it was a brutal ritual murder. At the same time, new neighbours move in next door to 12-year-old Oskar and his mother. They behave in a strange manner, keeping their windows covered during the day and only leaving the house at nighttime. Nevertheless, Oskar becomes friends with their enigmatic daughter. Tomas Alfredon‘s first cinema film is based on a Swedish cult novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist. This furious mixture of vampire film, love story and social study convincingly fuses the fantastical with everyday reality. Director Alfredson has put this into dreamy, somnambulist, wide screen images of terrifying beauty, working with surprising sound effects. The result is a unique cinema experience that remained unrivalled even by the US remake “Let Me In” (2010, director: Matt Reeves).
