Soundbreaker

Competition Documentaries, Finland 2011, 86 Min.

Kimmo Pohjonen performs on stage with rock musicians as well as with the Kronos Quartett. He has collaborated with the Tanzanian world musician Hukwe Zawose as well as with British farmers, whose farm machinery provided the “Wall of Sound” required for his “Earth Machine Project”. Kimmo Pohjonen is constantly seeking new challenges. He has revolutionized the accordeon using electric amplification, samples and effects. Born in 1964, it took him several years to accept the instrument in the first place, after a classical education at the Sibelius Academy and performances with his father's ensemble. It was a love-hate relationship, attested to by the “Accordeon Wrestling” matches that he organizes with Finnish wrestlers to this day - physically demanding performances during which Kimmo Pohjonen sometimes takes a sledge hammer to his instruments. And yes, ice diving is a personal hobby of his.
