Competition Documentaries, Finland 2011, 81 Min.
First off, Katja Gauriloff flew to Brazil, where labourers use their bare hands to extract ore from the ground, required for the production of the tin shell. From there she travelled to Denmark, where the pigs are fattened for the required meat part. The olive oil comes from Italy, the beef comes from a slaughterhouse in Poland, and the grain required for the pasta dough is harvested in the Ukraine. The tomatos are grown in Portugal and the eggs come from an industrial livestock farming plant in France. At each destination along this industrial production line, Katja Gauriloff interviewed farmers, butchers, miners, farm labourers and factory workers, who speak freely of their precarious living conditions and their personal dreams. Thanks to a globalized food industry, a can of ravioli costs less than one euro. This film shows who bears the real costs.
