Filmforum, Germany 2011, 80 Min., English subtitles
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, life in Russia became a struggle for survival for the common people. Many mothers sent their daughters to the golden West, in the hope of helping to bestow a better life upon them. Director Katja Fedulova, too, moves to Germany in 1993 and takes up studies in Kiel, where she befriends five young women who share her fate: Ilona, Olga, Alesja, Tatjana and Zhenja. They spend their time working illegally, partying and seeking men to marry, while dreaming of true love. 13 years later they meet again in Kiel. Have the girlfriends found their fortunes? The film gives an impressive account of emigrant life, of broken dreams, cultural uprooting, the struggle for autonomy and the complex relationships between mothers and their daughters.
