A annan vegEin anderer Weg / Either Way

Competition Narrative Films, Iceland 2011, 84 Min., English subtitles

A annan veg

Two men, alone with each other, doing monotonous work somewhere in the midst of Icelandic volcano-rock nowhere. They are repairing roads and marking the driving surface with medial strips on behalf of the Road Construction Office. Finnbogi, the elder of the two, is in his mid-thirties. Freddi is ten years younger. Finnbogi had previously lived in Vienna with his girlfriend and their daughter - something the two of them prefer not to think about. Freddi is said girlfriend's brother and since he is extremely guided by hormones, Finnbogi is supposed to teach him a little about the serious side of life. Freddi's accounts mostly circle on alcohol and women. Out here he must do without both. A weekend trip to town is to make up for it. But the much anticipated spree doesn't take place. Instead, Freddi returns with a black eye and a fatal message for Finnbogi. The film is full of laconic humour as it tells the story of two oppositional characters who develop sympathy and understanding for one another. "Either Way" is a "road movie" that veers from the absurd to the humanly touching yet always keeps on the track.
