“The Wayward Girl” is Edith Carlmar’s last feature film. 20-year old Liv Ullmann plays her first leading role here as the illegitimate 17-year old Gerd, who strays from the straight and narrow until she meets the young graduate Anders, who falls in love with her. In order to remove her from the bad influence of her current environment, he takes her with him to a remote cabin, where they live happily until the vagrant Benedik turns up and comes between them. The tension mounts, with Anders’ parents disapproving of the liaison. Yet in the end, Anders’ love conquers all. Norwegian critics hailed Liv Ullmann’s first major role, but were less enthusiastic about the way she was made to display her feminine charms: “Her face is lively and expressive, and she has sex. It is quite superfluous for Edith Carlmar to put so much emphasis on her breasts and thighs. Liv Ullmann is no BB. She has far more subtle and significant means at her disposal,” wrote Leif Borthen in the Oslo daily “Verdens Gang” in 1959.
