Naine has cancer; a Sami reindeer breeder recommends cryotherapy, whereupon the rich lady has her remote villa turned into an "ice palace", using ice from a nearby frozen-over lake. When she meets Jasper on an excursion to town, she lures the young man to her "kingdom", mainly to pass her time. Jasper is eager to leave everything behind – school, his girlfriend – to go ice-skating with Naine and take part in her lavish feasts. But soon Naine's frivolous games become serious: Jasper falls in love with the older woman, who keeps the truth about her sickness from him. Full of enchanting images, "The Snow Queen" tells the tale of a hot-cool "amour fou", in which snow-covered mountain and lake landscapes and an iced-over building provide a picturesque, eerie backdrop for a fatal passion that is not only threatened by the change in seasons.
