Jeg husker … fortællinger fra Grønland

An "Oral History". Telling stories has a long tradition in Greenland, as this film unforgettably shows: 14 old Greenlanders tell of key events in their childhood and youth. We hear, for example, of an orphan trembling with fear as he kills his first narwhale, and of a mummy's boy accidentally killing his puppy. A woman recalls her grandmother, who was given the saliva of a dog to drink immediately after birth to ensure that she would become as strong as the animal – and instead ended up “having as many lovers as a bitch in heat”. The stories are brought to life by the faces and animated voices of the speakers. In showing the current everyday lives of the Inuit, this fascinating documentary paints a complex portrait of Greenland's culture and traditions, while at the same time underlining the importance of oral history in the formation of identity.
