Aldi – Mutter aller Discounter

Even on occasion of its 50th anniversary, Aldi stays economical: music and decorations are too expensive for Aldi, an Aldi warehouse manager must catch mice himself as calling the pest-control would be too expensive, and even the anniversary celebrations don't cost the brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht a single penny: they simply don't take place. So far, the discount supermarket has successfully evaded any glances behind its cartons – and the Aldi brothers have systematically obscured any points of critique. But now a research team of unionists is collecting information on the situation of the Aldi staff and intends to publish an "Aldi Black Book". Initial research has confirmed that Aldi-Süd suppresses the election of works councils and that in the North, too, the cult facade hides pressure being put on unionists and critical employees. It is how the Albrecht brothers have become world market leaders. Today, Aldi is successfully making business in 17 countries. But its export goods include staff needs. The film gives voice to numerous critics of the enterprise, but also to its defenders, including Theo Albrecht's former right hand Dieter Brandes.
