Competition Documentaries, Denmark 2008, 37 Min., TV-mix
Somewhere in the midst of provincial Denmark: the neighbouring gardens of Frost and Jepsen are separated by two thick hedges and a strip of no man's land. The two neighbours have been enemies for more than 20 years, and have not spoken a single word with each other since. But why, in fact? Director Christian Sønderby Jepsen, son of neighbour Jepsen, wants to know, and seeks an answer with the help of his camera. Step by step he disovers that long ago, there was a misunderstanding that could actually be solved quite easily. Christian Sønderby Jepsen's elaborately staged documentary images of striking beauty depict the peculiarity of provincial life in Denmark. The inhabitants of Jutland express their views in a number of patient interviews, showing them in all their quirkiness and lovability. At the same time, "Side by Side" is a humorous and passionate plea for tolerance.
