Thy is a quiet, provincial, Danish village in Northern Jutland. Sommai, a former Thai prostitute, came here 15 years ago and married a Danish man. Since then, Sommai has acted as a marriage broker for many more women from Thailand. Today, almost 600 women from Thailand have married Danish men in Thy. Most recently, the young woman Kae has sought Sommai's help to bring her into Western prosperity. Will Sommai succeed in finding a husband for Kae? Janus Metz' documentary is a daring double portrait: on the one hand it shows women from Thailand who strive to escape the social misery of their homeland, while on the other hand it takes the perspective of marriage-minded men who usually only get to know their future wives from photographs. The result is an intimate look into the tense relationship between two utterly different cultures. And a social didactic play about the discrepancies and dependencies within a globalized world. The film's sequel, "Ticket to Paradise", continues with the story of Sommai and Kae.
