Den man älskarWen man liebt / To Love Someone

Den man älskar

Lena was once brutally beaten up and abused by her ex-husband Hannes. She now lives with Alf, a kind-hearted fishmonger in whose shop she also works. But then Hannes is released from prison and traumatized Lena’s old fears break loose. Although Hannes has absolved an anti-violence training in prison, he is driven by the desire to seek out Lena. And despite her fears Lena, too, cannot resist a certain attraction she feels to Hannes. The former couple begin to see each other again – and Alf can do nothing to prevent the love of his life from slipping slowly but surely from his fingers. Director Åke Sandgren is touching on an explosive issue in this extraordinary romantic drama, which has seldom been treated in the cinema: the dependencies within relationships marked by violence. His sensitive style of directing allows for a very close up view of the figures in the film and enables the audience to intensely share the confusion of emotions.
