JenterMädchen / Girls

Competition Documentaries, Norway 2007, 77 Min., English subtitles

Jenter

Norway’s answer to “Pool of Princesses”! Similar to the documentary from Berlin-Kreuzberg, this film centres on tough-as-nails girls. It concentrates on two rivalling gangs of girls at the Ruseløkka school in the West of Oslo. Although situated in the middle-class area of town between yacht harbour and Frogner Park, social differentiation takes place nonetheless. It becomes noticeable already in 9th grade. One of the girls portrayed is active in both groups, a hardened gang and the slightly better-behaved ‘Frogner Girls’. But she must decide to whom she wants to belong: the ‘wild side of life’ or the ‘snobs’. Hanne Myren’s “Girls” were THE big documentary film success at the presentation at the 2007 Norwegian Film Prizes. The director not only received an Amanda for Best Documentary, but also for Best Film for Children’s and Youth Audience.
