Followihg an illicit rendezvous with a married colleague, Klausen, a doctor, drives off into the night and, his concentration addled by infatuation, hits and kills a child. Klausen flees the scene. Soon afterwards, he receives a blackmail letter. When a handover of money is arranged, Klausen lies in wait for the supposed blackmailer and kills him in a struggle. The dead man is the son of chief inspector Van Veeteren, who had high hopes for his criminal son’s successful re-integration into bourgeois society. Van Veeteren swears to track down his son’s murderer. At the same time, Klausen receives a second blackmail letter. … Swedish author Håkan Nesser is currently one of Scandinavia's most successful crime writers.
