Children´s and Youth Films, Sweden 2005, 83 Min., German commentary
All Ulf really wants is a quiet holiday on the Swedish coast with his parents and grandparents. But his friend Percy has decided to come along too, and really upsets the apple-cart. Not only does he annoy Ulf by going after the same girl, Pia, but he also gets on Ulf’s parents’ nerves. To cap it all, he discovers the well-kept secret that Ulf’s grandfather is actually a rough diamond. “Percy, Buffalo Bill & I” is based on a novel by bestselling author Ulf Stark, who won the 1994 German Literature Prize. Director Anders Gustafsson’s adaptation is a wonderful summertime film for all the family, convincingly portraying the world of a young boy on the cusp of adolescence, in which the viewer is torn between sheer astonishment at the world of the adults and immense curiosity about the youngsters. With Bergman veteran Börje Ahlstedt brilliantly cast as the grandfather, and a superb score by Magnus Jarlbo.
